[Photo Portfolio]: Portrait of Mendut

 

Roro Mendut was a foster daughter of Adipati Pragolo Duke of Pesantenan (now Pati), who has been tributed to Tumenggung Wiroguno from Mataram in 17th century.

As she refused to be married by the Tumenggung, she was repressed to paid such an expensive taxes. To encountered the suppresive taxes from the Tumenggung, she sold cigarettes to earned money.

She sold the cigarettes uniquely, by ignited and sucked the cigarette prior to gave it to the buyers.

She became famous because of this attitude. The buyers believed that the cigarettes which has been  sucked by Roro Mendut were sweeter than others.
